Mask Dance Festival
"Mask" and "Talchum" are one of the most universal and common forms of culture in humanity. Masks can be found anywhere in the world, and people have used masks to express their joys and sorrows. Masks have been used in various fields such as play, rituals, ceremonies, and art, serving as a means for pursuing a happy life.
In Andong, there is the Andong International Mask Dance Festival, which revolves around these masks and Talchum. Based on Andong's culture, the festival has emerged as a representative event in South Korea, attracting over one million visitors during its ten-day duration.
Andong's culture has preserved a diverse range of traditions that have not been influenced by specific eras or biased by religion. With UNESCO-designated cultural heritage sites like Hahoe Village, Bongjeongsa Temple, Dosanseowon Confucian Academy, and Byungsan Confucian Academy, as well as intangible cultural assets such as Chajeon Nori (traditional games) and Hahoe Byeolsin Gut Talnori (ritual mask dance), Andong is a region rich in cultural treasures and a place that fully embodies Eastern aesthetics.
Particularly, Hahoe Byeolsin Gut Talnori, which has an 800-year history, holds unique fun and significance. This folk performance, passed down by the commoners in the village of Hahoe, reflects their way of life and allows us to glimpse their joys and sorrows through the mask dance.
The structure of Hahoe Byeolsin Gut Talnori follows the process of Gangsin, Osin, and Songsin, closely resembling the flow of the festival. Therefore, Hahoe Byeolsin Gut Talnori serves as the prototype for the Andong International Mask Dance Festival, incorporating elements such as the festival's flow, masks, mask dance, communal spirit, and historical significance of Andong's culture. Moreover, the artistic and aesthetic qualities of Hahoe masks (National Treasure No. 121) vividly depict the lives and personalities of each character, making them a representative face of Koreans recognized not only in Korea but also worldwide.
Based on the philosophy of Andong's diverse cultural resources and the cultural values associated with masks and Talchum, the Andong International Mask Dance Festival was inaugurated in 1997. Through this festival, Andong actively responds to cultural changes and redefines its values for cultural acceptance and development, resulting in the blossoming of a beautiful flower.
In other words, the cultural assets of harmony and coexistence have laid the foundation for the Andong International Mask Dance Festival.
It provides an opportunity to learn the serenity of a static mind within the value of cultural heritage and experience dynamic expression through the vitality inherent in Talchum.
